How to create a patriotic look you can wear beyond July 4th.

If you don’t have any “patriotic” pieces to wear this holiday weekend don’t stress! There’s no need to own a single piece that has red, white and blue in it when you can wear the three colors separately. This gives you a lot more wiggle room when styling looks (versus that one shirt you have with an American flag on it that you wear every Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.)

Firstly, I suggest starting with a white wardrobe staple to work around. Here are three easy outfit formulas you can try at home:

  • (1) WHITE dress + RED flats + NAVY* crossbody
  • (2) WHITE jeans + NAVY blouse + RED clutch (opt for a metallic sandal)**
  • (3) WHITE tee + NAVY shorts + RED statement necklace/earrings (opt for a nude wedge)

* Similarly, any shade of blue works just as well. However, navy tends to be a more classic, versatile shade that you are more likely to have in your wardrobe.

** Nude (skin tone) or any shade of metallic is always a safe option for a shoe that will complement your look without clashing – especially when you’re incorporating a lot of color or bold prints.

Note that any variation of these formulas would work just as well. Work with what you already own. However, If you’re lacking any of these white wardrobe staples there’s no better time to fill the void than now. There are always great sales over a holiday weekend!

Check out my current favorites for white tees, white denim and white dresses for summer. If you’re looking for a more overtly patriotic look try these.

Below are some looks I’ve put together in the past for inspiration. The funny thing is that I actually didn’t wear any of these looks on a patriotic holiday (although I absolutely could have). When you work with pieces you already own that are red, white and/or blue you can get so much more wear out of them throughout the year. (Brownie points for blue/white or red/white stripes!)

In conclusion, I hope these style tips inspire you to come up with some fun and festive looks for the holiday weekend. I’d love to see what you end up in. Tag @shopwithval #ItPaysToShopWithVal
